Polk Township Vol. Fire Dept.

Engine 841

Engine 841 is a Pumper from KME in Nesquehoning, PA  and Hoosier Fire in Valparaiso, IN. The chassis is a beautiful bright yellow 2000 Freightliner FL80 from Hill Truck Sales in South Bend, IN. It is our first top-mount pump console truck. The 350 H.P. Cummins electronic diesel will provide plenty of power. The Allison push button automatic transmission will make driving so much easier; no more shifting! The new 12,000 watt generator is hydraulic and completely integrated into the transmission and can be turned on from inside the cab.

New top mounted pump panel console

New top mounted pump panel console.

This is the first pumper we've owned with the top mounted pump operator console. All of our previous trucks had side mounted pump operator panels. The top console will allow the engine operator to have a complete 360 degree elevated view of the fire scene; something we've never had before. In the past, the engine operator had to make quick, critical decisions on which way to position the engine at the fire scene. The engine operator had to make the best decisions for:

  • Fire attack line placement
  • A direct view of the fire scene
  • Close proximity to the drop tank water supply
  • Proximity to the fire
  • Leave enough room for incoming water tankers
  • Out of way of overhead power lines
  • Consider wind direction and smoke travel

As you can see, there are a lot of split second decisions made as soon as the engine operator arrives on the fire scene. With our new top mounted console, it will be one less decision to make.

The new and the old
New 2000 Freightliner and Retired 1984 GMC

Engine 841 is stationed at our Station 1 in Tyner. It replaced a 1984 GMC pumper which was retired after 16 years of faithful service.
